Tips to Live Organically

We’ve all heard how a fast, or cleanse is a great way to start the year off. An organic cleanse is not just for our bodies. Your home deserves a fresh start, too, free of harsh chemicals and toxins.

Certain cleaning remedies, like vinegar have been used for centuries. Some sources say that vinegar was “discovered” in about 5000 BC. Hippocrates (420 BC) was said to have used vinegar medicinally to treat wounds.

Getting back to basics

When combined with other natural ingredients, like baking soda, vinegar will bubble and foam. In fact, that combination is used to unclog drains, or keep them clear and smelling fresh.

Just pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, followed by ½ cup of vinegar. Let it sit for a time, while the foam does its work. For the best results, after ten minutes, pour about 6 or so cups of boiling water.

So, it shouldn’t surprise you to learn that vinegar still tops the list of green cleaning products.

  • Vinegar (usually white vinegar) cleans and disinfects
  • Baking Soda can act as a scrubber in addition to unclogging drains (in combination with vinegar).
  • Lemon cuts through grease, and with a little salt cleans cutting boards
  • Castile soap acts as a foaming cleaning agent
  • Olive oil can be used to pick up dust and dirt while polishing wood.

It is a wise idea to prevent problems before they arise. Using a metal or plastic strainer in drains to catch hairs and stray earrings is a good idea.

Even air fresheners pollute
Back in 2007, the Natural Resources Defense Council released a study on a dozen common air fresheners, indicating that most contain chemicals that may affect hormones and reproductive development, particularly in babies. You can’t turn on the TV to a commercial station without seeing ads for air fresheners, but more recent studies still find that they still contribute to indoor hazardous air pollutants, both through direct emissions and secondary reaction products. Given the hazards, the fewer chemicals we spray into our home environments, the better.

Keeping your home clean, fresh and sweet smelling doesn’t require harsh chemicals. Getting back to basics can keep your family safe.
